World Meningitis Day falls on 24 April each year and this year’s theme is TakeAction #DefeatMeningitis. Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord. It is a potentially fatal disease that can have a life-changing, permanent impact on survivors, even when adequate treatment is provided. However, not many people are aware about the disease, and symptoms can often be confused with those of other diseases like the flu, malaria or even COVID-19.
Greater awareness and education about meningitis is therefore imperative as the disease can be prevented by immunisation through vaccination. Join Sunday Times Connect, in partnership with Sanofi Pasteur, on Wednesday, 21 April from 13h00 – 14h00 and hear more on this important topic from Lee Baker who is the President of SASTM (the South African Society of Travel Medicine) and a member of SAMEC (the South African Malaria Elimination Committee).
