The Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) Chief Operating Officer, Tshepo Kgobe is a multidisciplinary engineer with more than 22 years of extensive experience in managing complex projects and operations with diverse technical requirements in infrastructure, energy and mining; predominantly in the railway environment. Tshepo Kgobe has been in the railway industry since the beginning of his career and although he went into consulting for a while, he ended up back in the railway sector: “You could say I have trains in my veins.”
He started his career as civil engineer in KZN and specialised in rail programme and project management. At the start of his career, he worked in the Durban region as a Perway & Facilities operations line manager. Kgobe was previously in senior engineering management in Metrorail head office in Perway & Structures.
Kgobe joined the GMA in 2014 as the Senior Executive Manager responsible for the Technical Services Unit. This is his second stint on the Gautrain Rapid Rail Link Project. At the start of Gautrain, he was responsible for the engineering and project management of the trackwork subsystem. He stepped into the post of Chief Operating Officer in 2020 and has a novel commercial vision for the GMA. Over the last four years, he has been the Programme Manager for the Integrated Fare Management, the programme includes the development of a Single ticketing system, a Transport Management Centre, a Data Management Platform and an ITS communications backbone. Through this he has further grown his expertise in the technology space.
He has in addition, taken on the responsibility of managing the Integrated Fare Management Programme for the Gauteng Province. The programme entails the integration of all transport fare management systems in all the transport modes, the development of all smart mobility services, the integration of all transport related information services into a single transport management centre including related intelligent transport systems.
He has over 13 years’ experience as a director on the board of various companies, where he was responsible for business development, Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE), Transformation, Corporate Social Investment and Supplier Development.
Tshepo Kgobe has practiced and lived in South Africa; operating in the Rail industry with various local and international companies including the UK, with Corus Rail Consultancy. His international experience gives him the edge to perform on a global scale. He has worked on a series of large-scale multi-disciplinary projects.
