Project Description

Food labelling: Why unhealthy ingredients must be prominently flagged

Diets high in refined sugars, salt and saturated fat are implicated in an ever-growing global health crisis that is marked by an increased incidence of obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and death. It’s frightening to consider that more than 1 in 8 children in SA under the age of 5 are overweight.

In the wake of the Department of Health proposing the mandatory use of warning labels on food products, watch this Business Day Dialogues LIVE in partnership with the Healthy Living Alliance (HEALA) and its “Better Labels. Better Choices.” campaign, as we discuss the current health crisis – and the need for bolder front-of-package warning labels to help consumers make healthier and more informed food choices.

Consumers are encouraged to submit comments on the proposed regulations by 21 July 2023 here: https://awethu.amandla.mobi/petitions/demand-warning-labels-on-all-unhealthy-food
