Johannesburg, 21 November 2024: Alphamin Resources Corp (JSE: APH) has claimed top spot at the annual Sunday Times Top 100 Companies Awards that were held in Parktown, Johannesburg last night. Grindrod Ltd (JSE: GND) and Pan African Resources (JSE: PAN) placed second and third respectively. The Sunday Times Top 100 Companies Awards is futured by BCX and powered by Deloitte.

To qualify for the Sunday Times Top 100 Companies Awards, JSE-listed businesses are required to hold a minimum market capitalisation of R5 billion as of 31 August 2024, with winners determined by the highest returns for their shareholders over a five-year period, based on a theoretical initial investment of R10,000.

Alphamin Resource Corp’s 5-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 39.6% for the period from 1 September 2019 to 31 August 2024, means that R10,000 invested in 2019 would have delivered R53,976 in 2024.

Grindrod Ltd realised an annual CAGR of 33.2% to deliver R41,879, while Pan African Resources returned R35,721 with a CAGR of 29% over the same 5-year period.

Leadership awards

The Business Leader of the Year Award acknowledges those who have made a significant contribution to the South African economy and is decided by CEOs of the Sunday Times Top 100 Companies from the previous year.

This year Standard Bank CEO Sim Tshabalala was celebrated by industry peers, recognising his leadership. Tshabalala joins an elite list of former recipients including Mpumi Madisa, Andrew Kirby, Adrian Gore, Michael Brown, Lesetja Kganyago, Pravin Gordhan, Dr Johan van Zyl, Dr Michael Jordaan, Gerrie Fourie, and Phuthuma Nhleko, amongst others.

Prominent businessman Dr Reuel Khoza, was this year’s recipient of the Lifetime Achiever Award.

The award is decided by a high-profile independent panel, recognising an individual that consistently contributes to the South African economy. Dr Khoza will join the likes of Gloria Serobe, Patrice Motsepe, Dr Richard Maponya, Adrian Gore, Dr Johann Rupert, Allan Gray, Raymond Ackerman, and Former President Nelson Mandela as previous recipients of the Sunday Times Top 100 Companies Lifetime Achiever Award. The award is decided by a high-profile independent panel, recognising an individual who consistently contributes to the South African economy.
